In a time when rigid classifications are increasingly being dismantled, even living spaces are becoming more hybrid and flexible, opening up to new uses and functions. In particular, recent years have seen a rapid transformation in how office work is conducted, with greater detachment from fixed company headquarters. More and more people now have the freedom to work from anywhere, with many favouring the comfort of the home environment over traditional office settings.

This renovation project stemmed from the needs of a young client wishing to transform a traditional 70-square-metre flat in central Milan into a space for both living and working. The goal was to define separate zones while maintaining visual continuity throughout. A constraint in the existing building—the residual corner formed by the lift shaft—was reimagined as an office nook with intimate proportions, ample natural light, and a direct connection to the heart of the home.

Structural interventions were kept to a minimum, with only one wall removed to join two rooms into a single living/dining space. The materials were selected for their neutral, warm tones to create a calming and welcoming atmosphere, suitable for use at any time of day. A light grey microcement floor, warm white walls, and bespoke birch plywood furnishings—chosen for their soft grain and light hues—define the interior. All furniture was custom-designed for the flat, resulting in a flexible and harmonious home tailored to the owner’s lifestyle.
