The project for the new LICAM is based on the concept of a refined, measured building, composed of simple volumes and characterised by a façade that plays with rhythm and proportion in its architectural elements. The façade design features varying sizes of vertical and horizontal trapezoidal components that form a frame expressing the building’s structural essence. The envelope showcases a dynamic interplay between solid and void, where the tactile quality of concrete contrasts with the transparency and lightness of glass. In terms of materials, the façade is composed of prefabricated brick-coloured concrete elements, evoking the Roman-era architecture found nearby, particularly the “Tour du Pailleron”.
In terms of form, the building echoes the geometry of the former structure on the site, reinterpreted in a contemporary manner. Simplified and refined, it emphasises transparency and visual openness, establishing a strong connection with the surrounding urban context and landscape through varied heights that respond to adjacent buildings.
The third floor hosts a roof garden conceived as a hortus conclusus—a secluded, open-air classroom. Vegetation is the central feature of this space, creating a natural setting composed of native tree species, shrubs, small fruit trees, and aromatic plants.
